Book Overview

Maggie is a seventeen year old girl who's had a bad year. She was smart and on track but then her mom left, her dad is depressed, she's graduating, barely, and her boyfriend of almost three years dumped her for a college football scholarship. Lately she thinks life is all about hanging on by a thread and is gripping tight with everything she has. Then she meets Caleb. She saves his life and instantly knows there's something about him that's intriguing but she is supposed to be on her way to a date with his cousin. But things change when they touch, sparks ignite. Literally. They imprint with each other and she sees their future life together flash before her eyes. She learns that not only is she his soul mate, and can feel his heartbeat in her chest, but there is a whole other world of people with gifts and abilities that she never knew existed. She herself is experiencing supernatural changes unlike anything she's ever felt before and she needs the touch of his skin to survive. Now, not only has her dad come out of his depression to be a father again, and a pain as well, but Caleb's enemies know he's imprinted and are after Maggie to stop them both from gaining their abilities and take her from him. Can Caleb save her or will they be forced to live without each other after just finding one another?

My Take

Significance is such a great story and gripped me from the first chapter. Maggie's life has seemed to go from perfect to dismal as fast as she could blink. Kyle, one of her friends from school who has crushed on her for forever, finally gets up the nerve to ask Maggie out. Although Maggie knows she only ever wants to be friends with Kyle, she agrees to go out with him to get away from what has become her dull existence of a life. On the way to meet Kyle, she bumps into Caleb and saves his life, literally. This cute boy peeks her interest, but little does she know, she's just saved Kyle's cousin (can we say added layers of drama!). When Caleb and Maggie eventually touch, they imprint upon each other as destined soul mates. Maggie discovers a whole world of  families/clans who imprint for life and gain special abilities once they ascend with their significant.

Of course, Kyle is none too happy, as he knows he can no longer have the person he feels is the love of his life. But Kyle is not the only one who isn't happy with Maggie and Caleb's imprinting. None of the clans have been imprinting for the past several years and a rival clan will stop at nothing from keeping Maggie and Caleb from obtaining their abilities. Trouble ensues and Maggie and Caleb find themselves ripped apart. Will they find each other again or is their new destiny to live apart from one another feeling the ache for each other that can only be remedied by the touch of the other?

After imprinting, Maggie and Caleb need to be near each other, touching even, to keep the ache and pain away. Each other's touch is soothing and necessary for their survival. While reading this book, I couldn't help but compare aspects of the story to my own life. Most of us have probably been there. Now my stomach may not hurt and I may not get a headache when I'm away from the love of my life, but don't we all feel that ache inside of us when we are away from our partner, our "significant?" I know I believe in love at first site and imprinting is just a heightened aspect of what we already have in our world. While the paranormal aspects of the story may not be true to life, the underlying feelings behind them are; I believe this is why Shelly Crane has created such a relate-able and intriguing world. I highly recommend this book and I cannot wait to find out what happens in the next installment (luckily for me and you, the first four books are already published, so I don't have to wait long!)

Overall I give Significance:

Shelly has created a world with underlying aspects of love, heartache, and family that relate to us all. Her fresh take on paranormal romance has me falling in love all over again!

Shelly is a NEW YORK TIMES & USA TODAY bestselling author from a small town in Georgia and loves everything about the south. She is wife to a fantastical husband and stay-at-home mom to two boisterous and mischievous boys who keep her on her toes. She hoards paperbacks, devours sweet tea, searches year-round for candy corn, and loves to spend time with her family and friends, go out to eat at new restaurants, site-see in the new areas they travel to, listen to music, and, of course, loves to read, but doesn't have much time to these days with all the characters filling her head begging to come out.

Her own books happen by accident and she revels in the writing and imagination process. She doesn't go anywhere without her notepad for fear of an idea creeping up and not being able to write it down immediately, even in the middle of the night, where her best ideas are born.
