Review - "Unless You Can Be A Unicorn" by Delphina Henley

I am SOOOO excited to introduce everyone to Delphina Henley and her new book release "Unless You Can Be A Unicorn." I'm even prouder to say that I got to meet the author at UtopYA this year and she is such a sweetheart (and a great dance partner!). I will say that I don't believe anyone knew that Delphina was writing this book. A few weeks ago she messaged me and asked if I would like to read her new book . . . of course I said a great big YES!! I'm so glad I had the opportunity because I loved this book!

About the Author

Delphina Henley has always been a unicorn. Attracted to the worlds of words and unique magical creatures from a very early age, she's made reading a full time career. In January 2012 she founded her blog Delphina Reads Too Much. Since then, she's worked with countless authors through the writing, revising and release processes, learning about the craft and business 'til her head and heart were bursting with an absolute need to bring this story into the world.

When she's not writing or reading, Delphina can be found playing with her four kids and her husband back home at Michigan. Even her one year old is addicted to books. And of course, they all love unicorns.

As a fellow blogger, you have no idea how much she has encouraged and supported me during this first few months of starting a blog. I don't believe you will meet a more genuine person. If you get a chance, make sure to check out her social media pages listed at the end of the post.

Overview

Always be yourself... that was the last advice Scout's Grandma Nora gave her before she died. Scout has spent her life trying to be anything but, but she has a chance to start anew as she moves several states away to college. She had always thought the glowing aura she saw around some people was a childhood fancy, but when it starts coming back just as she's starting her new life, she learns there was much hidden about who she truly is.

Thankfully, she has a motley crew to help her along the way: a spunky bookseller, a trustworthy pub owner, a commanding grandmother, a possible best friend, and a hot rocker boy who only has eyes for her.

Unless You Can Be A Unicorn is a New Adult Paranormal Romance with content appropriate for a Young Adult audience.

My Take

"Always be a yourself - unless you can be a unicorn. Then always be a unicorn."

The opening line of this book tells you that this adventure is going to be a whimsical and fantastic journey . . . and it doesn't disappoint. Our story begins with an introduction to Scout. Unfortunately, Scout's grandmother, who helped raise her, has died right before Scout's freshman year of college. With a heavy heart in tow, Scout starts her freshman year, but strange occurrences and a box of secrets left to her by her grandmother make Scout start to wonder if there is something wrong with her.

After meeting her new roommate Val, the two become fast friends and Val introduces her to a hot college town hangout B3. But B3 isn't all that it seems and soon Scout finds herself swooning over Pierce, a hot rocker, who to Scout's amazement only has eyes for her! Pierce and her new friends at B3 introduce her to a world that her grandmother kept hidden from her.

However, as with all good things, someone is always out to ruin the fun and Scout, Val, and her new B3 group find out all too soon that a group just as terrible as they are good have their eyes fixed on harming Scout to obtain her special abilities. The troop must rally together to protect each other before it's too late and all their happily ever afters come to a fast conclusion.

I absolutely LOVED this book! It's such a fun read and I quickly connected with Scout. Delphina has provided such depth to her character that I couldn't help but fall in love with her mannerisms and slang. Never again will I simply drink a mug of hot tea . . . it will always be a "cuppa." Her relationship with Val reminded me of hanging with my best friend and Pierce is a total hotty! The only complaint I have is that I have to wait for the next book to come out! Where is the list to sign up to be a Unicorn, because I want on it!

I highly recommend this book so be sure to check out the release day blitz that Charles' Book Nook is a part of on Monday, October 13, 2014. You can get buy your copy and there will also be an awesome giveaway!
